Periodontitis. Causes and treatment

Periodontitis is a common dental disease that develops gradually and does not cause pain or discomfort in the initial stages. It is possible to notice the disease only when it affects the bone and soft tissues. Unfortunately, by this point, the disease has developed enough to cause problems even with qualified treatment.

The causes of periodontitis are varied:

  1. Poor oral hygiene. Plaque that remains on the teeth and in the spaces between the teeth is a dangerous substance that gradually mineralizes and hardens if it is not removed in time. Most of all, people who do not pay due attention to brushing their teeth suffer from plaque hardening;
  2. Circulatory problems. Especially often the disease occurs in smokers with experience. Tobacco smoke constricts the vessels of the oral mucosa and makes them more fragile, and this, in turn, reduces the activity of blood circulation and leads to periodontitis;
  3. Lack of vitamins. Poor diet can also contribute to the onset of the disease. If you do not eat enough vegetables, fruits, greens, meat and fish, the body may lack useful trace elements, and this will manifest itself as a dental disease.

Depending on the stage of the disease and the nature of its course, treatment may be different:

  1. Teeth cleaning. The first thing to do is to clean your teeth of hard deposits. The dentist removes plaque and calculus so that the gums can restore their previous position and tightly cover the teeth;
  2. Medicines. After freeing the teeth from plaque and hard deposits, you need to get rid of the inflammation and bleeding of the gums. For this, local antiseptic compounds are used;
  3. Surgical intervention. It is required only in special cases, when the inflammation has penetrated deep into the bone tissue. Then the doctor partially excised the gum, washes the affected tissue with drugs. In the most severe situations, individual sections of bone tissue can be replaced with artificial materials.

After treatment, you will need to adhere to the recommendations for the prevention of periodontitis, otherwise all measures taken will have only a temporary effect. Be sure to consult a doctor about this, regularly remove plaque, pay more attention to hygiene and diet.
